Project

A European alliance dedicated to establishing a standardized, open-access qualification for healthcare simulation technicians.

About the Project

SIMTECHED brings together Europe’s leading simulation centers, engineers, educators, and technology innovators to create a future-ready training experience for simulation technicians. The project merges medical education, engineering expertise, and digital innovation into a single, accessible learning journey.

Healthcare simulation has evolved rapidly, yet the role of the simulation technician remains undefined and underdeveloped. European simulation centers frequently rely on staff without formal training, resulting in fragmented skill sets and operational challenges. SIMTECHED responds to this gap by creating a structured, validated curriculum based on extensive needs analysis, expert input, and practical requirements.

Objectives & Course Design

Objectives – 3 main goals

Innovation

Stimulating innovative learning and teaching practice

Connection

Promoting inter-connected higher education systems

Competence

Improving the competences of educators and other adult learning and guidance staff

The project aims to design a course to teach students and people of various backgrounds the basics to become technicians in healthcare simulation centers. Technology is a key enabling tool to deliver simulation-based education as much as it can be a hindrance if not managed properly. This project will address the existing gap in the education of simulation technicians by developing a freely available and reproducible course.

The Course at a Glance

A blended learning experience combining theory, practice and innovation.

Theorectical

This will deal with content such as essentials in simulation training as well as state-of-the-art simulation technology, but also innovative technological approaches.

Practical

The theoretical part is followed by a practical course where the learners will consolidate their theoretical knowledge with hands-on activities. This will take place at two simulation centers (Ljubljana and Brno) ensuring that the knowledge can be applied at the different working environments.

Online Workshop

At the end of the course on online workshop is held to clarify any unanswered questions, present own projects, exchange new ideas and expand a common network for possible future collaborations.

Work Packages

The SIMTECHED project is structured into five interconnected Work Packages (WPs), each contributing to the development, evaluation, and dissemination of Europe’s first comprehensive training programme for simulation technicians. Together, these WPs ensure systematic project management, high-quality course development, rigorous evaluation, and long-term impact through open access materials.

01

Project Management

Keeping everything connected.

Ensures the overall coordination, quality assurance, administrative management and communications with all the partners included. Key tasks include monitoring the progress through a GANTT chart as well as quarterly reports, financial management and ensuring compliance with accessibility and data protection.

02

Course Concept and Content

Where the content comes to life.

Goal of this WP is the development of a coherent training course consisting of theoretical and practical modules as well as an online workshop, spanning a total of 160 hours. To achieve this goal several healthcare simulation experts within the consortium with different backgrounds and experience working in simulation centers in different roles will be consolidated. Also feedback from external experts will be included to refine and adjust the course concept and content.

03

Course Phase

Turning knowledge into hands-on experience.

WP3 aims to roll out the course, which consists of a theoretical part structured in 72 hours, a practical part structured in 40 hours, and a final 8h online workshop. Within this phase the selection and preparation of instructors takes place as well as the official kick-off and implementation of the course. This includes the theoretical course delivery on the digital platform as well as the practical training weeks at the simulation centers in Brno and Ljubljana and the online workshop for project presentation, networking and reflection.

04

Evaluation and Train-the-Teacher Course

Ensuring the course truly works.

The goal of this phase is the continous evaluation of the developed course and the adaptation of its contents to the evaluation results. The constant exchange with the participants in the form of a formative evaluation of the program gives the partners the opportunity to implement an iterative process of course development. The result will be the development of a “Train the teacher” course, including the concept and all necessary materials. The “Train the teacher” course will be part of the handbook and will provide all those who will reproduce the SIMTECHED course with knowledge on how to train the involved teachers in a standardised manner before implementing the course in their simulation center.

05

Dissemination and Handbook

Making the project accessible to all.

The last WP is focused on sharing the project results with all relevant stakeholders through various dissemination activities. For this a handbook will be developed and published, which includes the course concept, materials and the project results. The dissemination plan includes a project website, social media channels as well as conference presentations (e.g.,SESAM 2026/2027). Apart from that an open-access digital handbook is the goal, which is going to include the course concept, materials and the project results.
